GOP plans to prohibit the adoption

The leader of the majority Republican Senate, Georgia, said this week that some colleagues are on a legislative proposal to ban gay adoptions by a constitutional amendment which would go before voters in November 2006.State Sen. Tommie Williams (R-Lyons) said in an e-mail interview that, if the legislation of the General Assembly shall meet once in January, the public is likely that the amendment back on the overwhelming support for 2004, Amendment 1, the value added of a ban on homosexual marriage in the State Constitution.

“Some of our members have mentioned the ban on homosexual adoption,” said Williams.

But Williams said there is little chatters between colleagues for a ban on gay parents, a concern that the surface recently in the hiring of Mary Dean Harvey, as the State Department for Family and Children Services. Harvey Gay prohibits the promotion of care during his tenure as director of Nebraska’s Department of Social Services.

“I am not aware, each introduction of a ban on caring for homosexual parents,” said Williams. “I’m not sure that the votes are there, such a law. If the bill is a change of Constitution, it requires a two thirds majority. If the vote on same-sex marriage is a sign, as a vote on Gay able to stop this happens, it is possible that two thirds of votes in May. ”

State Senator Nancy Schaefer (R-City of Turner), guaranteed, anti-gay legislation in this year, targeting gay parents in a column published by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 21 September.

“The long-term consequences of homosexual adoption weigh heavier than the short-term relief for the Advancement of care,” said Schaefer. “Studies show that most homosexual relationships are temporary and high risk. Montrent parents gays are often far behind the mark of responsible behaviour and solidarity “.

, Adds she added, “for the prohibition of the adoption of children by same-sex couples is sound policy.

But a spokesman said Schaefer Southern Voice on September 16, the senator from the state had no plans to introduce a law on banning gay parents or gay adoption.

“Right now, it has no plans, and it has not even thought about,” said Amy Phillips Schaefer’s office. Schaefer declined an interview with a journalist.

Philip Davis, President of Georgia gay Log Cabin Republicans, said that the legislation of the party in the wrong direction.

“This is 100 percent the wrong direction to take Republicans,” said Davis. “Our party is small government, low taxes and individual rights. This legislation is inconsistent with the numbers one and three. This is a kind of anti-family values as something that I can thinking.
